Volatile Organic Compound’s
Determining the source of Volatile Organic Compound’s require sophisticated equipment and training that is beyond the scope and ability of most environmental inspectors and indoor air quality inspectors. We provide a detailed approach to our property inspections and understand the right indicators to look for in a property that may indicate what is causing the Volatile Organic Compound issue. CMI has over 10 years’ experience in testing and assessing homes and businesses for indoor air quality such as Volatile Organic Compound’s.
What is a VOC (Volatile Organic Compound)?
Volatile organic compounds (VOC’s), such as formaldehyde, are emitted as gases from certain materials. VOC’s include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short and long-term adverse health effects. VOC’s are emitted by a wide array of products numbering in the thousands. Examples include: paints and lacquers, paint strippers, cleaning supplies, pesticides, building materials and furnishings, office equipment such as copiers and printers, glues and adhesives, permanent markers, and photographic solutions.
TO-15 Canisters: Pressurized canisters are placed in rooms where potential sources that are off-gassing VOC’s may be located. The canister is then transported to the lab for analysis.
VOC Health Effects
The ability of VOCs to cause health effects varies from those that are highly toxic, to those with no known health effect. As with other pollutants, the extent and nature of the VOC health effects will depend on many factors including level of exposure and length of time exposed.
• Eye and respiratory tract irritation
• visual disorders
• memory impairment
Are among the immediate symptoms that some people have experienced soon after exposure to certain VOCs. Many VOCs are known to cause cancer in animals; some are known to cause, cancer in humans. It is important to consult with a medical professional for proper diagnosis. Children, elderly and those who are immune compromised are usually most affected by VOCs.
